Bipolar disorder, which has also been called manic depression, is a type of mood disorder characterized by severe mood swings. Unlike the normal ups and downs that all people experience, the moods of a person with bipolar disorder shift from periods of intense elation to periods of intense sadness and can seriously disrupt the functions of that person’s everyday life.
